Two-time champion West Indies has been eliminated from the 2023 50-over World Cup qualification race in India, following a surprising seven-wicket defeat by Scotland in a Super Six match of the qualifier.
The former champions of the 1975 and 1979 editions will miss out on the top 10 teams in limited overs cricket for the first time in the tournament’s 48-year history.
In this match, the West Indies once again struggled with the bat, posting a meager total of 181 all-out in 43.5 overs. Scotland comfortably chased down the target with seven wickets in hand and 6.3 overs to spare, adding to the West Indies’ disappointment.
Matthew Cross (74 not out off 107 balls) and Brendon McMullen (69 off 106 balls) formed a solid partnership of 125 for the second wicket, securing Scotland’s victory.
Having previously lost a crucial Super Over eliminator to the Netherlands in a Group A match, following a defeat to Zimbabwe, the West Indies entered the Super Six round with no points and an inferior net run rate compared to other teams.
The West Indies’ fate depended on the outcomes of other matches. Despite having four points from victories against the USA (by 35 runs) and Nepal (by 101 runs), their hopes were dashed due to a series of poor performances in various aspects of the game. This situation was exacerbated by losses to Zimbabwe and the Netherlands, both of whom advanced to the Super Six from Group A.
Brief Score: Scotland 185 for 3 (Cross 74*, McMullen 69) beat West Indies 181 (Holder 45, McMullen 3-32, Watt 2-25) by seven wickets.
