World Cup Qualifiers 2023: Zimbabwe beats Oman to move one step closer to ODI World Cup qualification

After winning all matches in the group stages, the host is now up to six points in the Super Six, thanks to its four points carried over and a further two picked up at the Queens Sports Club.

Zimbabwe clinched a 14-run victory over Oman in the Super Six stage of the ICC World Cup Qualifier. Sean Williams played a pivotal role once again, scoring a brilliant 142 off 103 balls, setting the stage for Zimbabwe to post a challenging total of 332/7.

Zimbabwe had a rocky start, losing skipper Craig Ervine (21) and Joylord Gumbie (25) early on. However, Williams and Sikandar Raza (42) stabilized the innings with a partnership of 112 for the fourth wicket. Despite Fayyaz Butt’s efforts (4/79), Zimbabwe was in a strong position at 276/6 with five overs left. Luke Jongwe’s quick 43 not out in 28 balls boosted the total.

In response, Oman’s Kashyap Prajapati was the standout performer, scoring a century (103 off 97 balls). However, he lacked support from the other end as wickets fell at regular intervals. Ayaan Khan contributed 47, but Zimbabwe’s bowlers, particularly Richard Ngarava and Blessing Muzarabani, picked up crucial wickets. Although Oman put up a fight, they ultimately fell short by 14 runs.

Zimbabwe continued their strong form in the tournament, earning another valuable victory and moving closer to securing a spot in the 50-over World Cup in India.

Brief Score: Zimbabwe 332 for 7 (Williams 142, Jongwe 43*, Raza 42, Butt 4-79) beat Oman 318 for 9 (Prajapati 103, Ayaan 47, Ilyas 45, Muzarabani 3-57, Chatara 3-73) by 14 runs.
